ABOUT ME

I am a PhD Computer Engineer with a strong background in software engineering, IoT systems, and applied research. I hold a PhD from the Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH) on wireless technologies for remote monitoring and diagnosis, an MSc in Computer Science from the University of Edinburgh, and a Diploma in Computer Engineering from the University of Patras.

With over 17 years of experience, I have contributed to 15+ research projects at the Athena Research Centre and DUTH, focusing on Reliability Engineering, Industrial IoT, Digital Twins, and e-Maintenance, with additional work in Cultural Heritage digitisation and Smart Cities. I combine full-stack software development with academic teaching and research, currently serving as an Adjunct Lecturer and Research Associate.

RESEARCH PROJECTS

StratiGraph: Knowledge Graphs for Stratigraphy

2026–present | Athena RC — ILSP

StratiGraph aims to transform archaeological and paleontological field documentation by developing open, collaborative tools that integrate knowledge graphs, artificial intelligence, and 3D documentation techniques. The project introduces a “Data-Ready” approach, enabling clean, structured data collection during fieldwork for seamless integration into knowledge graphs without additional curation. A key innovation is the “works-everywhere” design, ensuring tool functionality even where power and connectivity are limited. All tools follow open science principles, are open-source, and produce FAIR-compliant data.

My role: Monitoring and analysis of desktop stratigraphy tools to ensure their effective integration with the project’s knowledge graph. Development of software requirements specifications (SRS) as a reference point for current and future stratigraphy tools. Definition of the StratiGraph protocol as an integration approach that allows tools to interoperate with the knowledge graph in a standardised, efficient, and scalable manner.

ARTEMIS: Applying Reactive Twins to Enhance the Monument Information Systems

2025–present | Athena RC — ILSP

ARTEMIS addresses cultural heritage conservation, restoration, and valorisation through the concept of Reactive Digital Twins. Unlike static digital replicas, a reactive digital twin is a living, responsive representation that dynamically reflects the behaviour and condition of a real-world heritage asset. The project implements services on heritage documentation data that model asset behaviour under different conditions and external phenomena, enabling digital experiments that simulate the effects of various activities on the twin.

My role: Design and development of a microservices architecture supporting the ARTEMIS platform in implementing the reactive digital twin design pattern. Development of a web-based environment where annotations drive the dynamic behaviour and reactivity of the digital twin, transforming it into a tool for enrichment, adaptation, and responsive representation of cultural heritage assets. Formulation of a pilot template methodology to define the specifications of each pilot case.

SmartC4G_2.0: Interconnected Smart Cities for Greece 2.0

2025 | Athena RC — ILSP

A flagship Greek research project aiming to create a unified IoT platform through extensive analysis and integration of urban infrastructure across Greek cities. SmartC4G_2.0 focused on implementing a digital twin of a school building complex located within the University of Patras campus. The digital twin was produced through an IoT infrastructure providing real-time measurements of energy consumption and environmental conditions, combined with a 3D digitisation process of the buildings.

My role: Development of a web-based annotation and characterisation environment for the school building infrastructure. The tool supported manual segmentation of building geometry according to construction materials and their energy-related properties. Additionally, the platform functioned as a digital twin by visualising energy parameter flows through annotated points of interest, providing a comprehensive picture of the building’s energy behaviour and performance.

JustReDI: Resilience, Inclusion and Development — Towards a Just, Green and Digital Transition

2024–2025 | Athena RC — ILSP

A flagship interdisciplinary project examining the impacts of the green and digital transition on individuals, households, businesses, and public policy across Greek regions. JustReDI combined primary and secondary data analysis to map areas and sectors differentially affected by the twin transition. The project identified education and training needs in digital and green skills, while elaborating targeted public policy proposals.

My role: Design and development of GreenDC, a web-based decision-support and self-assessment platform for data centres. The tool focused on sustainability, energy efficiency, and progressive compliance with the EU Code of Conduct on Data Centre Energy Efficiency. It translated the regulatory framework and its technical sustainability guidelines into a structured digital instrument for evaluation, benchmarking, and continuous improvement.

Greece 4.0: Excellence Network for Digital Transformation Technologies in Greek Manufacturing

2024–2025 | Athena RC — ILSP

Greece 4.0 served as a pilot pillar for Industry 4.0, providing the necessary infrastructure and knowledge for the development, testing, and validation of smart manufacturing services including Industrial IoT platforms, Digital Twins, control systems, robotics, and Artificial Intelligence. The project aimed to assist Greek manufacturing companies in their digital transformation.

My role: Design, development, and extension of a web-based 3D annotation platform for industrial training applications. The tool enabled rich semantic annotation of 3D models representing industrial machinery, transforming static digital assets into structured educational resources. The platform also supported export of annotated data in formats suitable for downstream Virtual Reality training tools.

APTOS: Innovative Methods for Accessing Cultural Heritage by the Visually Impaired

2020–2023 | Athena RC — ILSP

APTOS addressed a fundamental question in cultural heritage accessibility: how can visually impaired people meaningfully experience museum artefacts when tactile contact is typically prohibited? The project proposed a multidisciplinary approach fusing ambient intelligence, microcontrollers, 3D digitisation and printing, and audio narration to create smart exhibit replicas that transform passive museum objects into interactive, haptic experiences. Three prototype systems were developed and installed at the Epigraphic Museum of Athens.

My role: Design and development of the IoT service layer powering the smart exhibit systems. Integration of single board computers, microcontrollers, RFID readers, and proximity sensors into 3D printed cultural heritage replicas. This project represented a pivotal personal shift toward human-centric design and accessibility. The work produced four publications including two first-author journal papers in the Journal of Cultural Heritage, one of which received the Editor’s Choice distinction.

Safety4ALL: A Collaborative Human-AI Platform for Crowdsourced Safety Evaluation

2020–2023 | Athena RC

A collaborative platform addressing the gap between expert-driven occupational health and safety auditing and broader workforce participation in safety reporting. Safety4ALL introduced a novel three-level evaluation architecture integrating crowdsourced citizen assessments, multimodal AI classification, and expert-in-the-loop validation. The platform combined location-based reporting using BLE, QR, and NFC technologies with a multimodal text and image classification pipeline built on a dual-encoder transformer architecture.

My role: Technical management and requirements engineering for the entire platform. This project marked a pivotal shift toward human-centric research dimensions, combining artificial intelligence with human contribution through collective awareness platforms. Building on prior experience with human-in-the-loop systems in industrial maintenance, Safety4ALL extended this paradigm into Industry 5.0 territory.

ESTIA developed a comprehensive platform for the forecast, detection, and management of structural fire incidents within cultural heritage settlements and sites. The platform incorporated advanced simulation capabilities for fire propagation and crowd behaviour, offering responsible authorities tools for risk assessment, first responder training, and real-time incident management. The old town of Xanthi (Greece) served as the primary case study.

My role: Design and development of a web-based multi-user annotation tool that represented a pivotal transition from metadata management systems toward annotation-enriched digital twins. The tool enabled 3D visualisation and semantic annotation of urban-scale point cloud data. Civil protection stakeholders could mark and codify risk-relevant points of interest directly on the 3D representation of the urban fabric.

PALMIS: Product and Asset Lifecycle Management Infrastructure and Services

2016–2017 | Athena RC — ILSP (with Siemens)

PALMIS targeted active lifecycle management of industrial products and assets, aiming to close the loop between lower-level production shop-floor functions and higher-level decision-making. The project integrated Internet of Things (IoT) and Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) technologies with smart data processing and management, enabling both monitoring intelligence and operational knowledge to flow seamlessly across the production environment.

My role: Extension of the IMA-FMEA platform into a sociotechnical system where both human expertise and cyber-physical infrastructure could concurrently activate and validate segments of a failure analysis study. The CPS layer enabled automated correlation of sensor threshold events and operational behaviour patterns with specific failure causes and effects. This work was published as “Enabling the human in the loop” (J7, 2019).

WelCOM: Wireless Sensor Networks for Engineering Assets Lifecycle Optimal Management

2011–2015 | Athena RC — ILSP

A research project focused on advancing Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) through a flexible toolset of wireless sensor networks, mobile devices, and intelligent software services. The WelCOM platform enabled ubiquitous, transparent access to maintenance-related data and services, encompassing wireless monitoring infrastructure with embedded intelligence for condition capture, deviation detection, fault diagnosis, and prognostic estimation.

My role: Design and development of IMA-FMEA (Intelligent Maintenance Advisor), a web-based tool that transformed traditional FMEA studies into a living, field-validated knowledge framework. Known failure modes, causes, and effects were presented as observable events to be confirmed or annotated during field inspections. This work formed the core of the PhD research and produced 10 publications.

iLearn2Main: Industrial Training System for the Modern Manufacturing Enterprise

2009–2010 | Athena RC — ILSP

An e-learning platform designed to improve the qualifications and employability of maintenance management personnel in the manufacturing sector. Built on a customised Moodle environment, iLearn2Main delivered a learner-centric training experience aligned with EFNMS (European Federation of National Maintenance Societies) competence standards, covering modern maintenance strategies such as condition monitoring, e-maintenance, and reliability-centred practices.

My role: Development of learning objects focused on e-maintenance and condition monitoring. Authoring of educational content and self-assessment material for the customised Moodle-based LMS, targeting maintenance managers seeking to modernise their practices through digital tools and methodologies.

U-Sense: Sensor Middleware for Embedded Intelligence in WSNs

2008–2009 | Athena RC — ILSP

Evaluation of an early-stage wireless sensor network (WSN) platform for its capacity to support embedded, node-level analytics in condition monitoring scenarios. The project focused on assessing the extent to which computationally constrained sensor hardware and its accompanying middleware could accommodate intelligent pre-processing, specifically novelty detection algorithms applied to measurement streams. U-Sense provided valuable insights into the feasibility of pushing analytical intelligence to the network edge.

My role: Software evaluation and benchmarking of the WSN middleware stack. Comparative assessment of embedded processing capabilities for on-node signal analysis and anomaly detection, within the constraints of early IoT hardware.

SEEDS: Cost-Effective and Replicable RES-Integrated Electrified Heating and Cooling Systems

2024–2025 | DUTH

A European project aiming to reduce buildings’ thermal energy demand and enable energy flexibility to increase the renewable energy share, enhancing grid stability in a cost-effective way with low lifecycle environmental impact.

My role: Development and support of web applications for the dissemination of the project’s research outcomes. Coordination of Design Thinking workshops and authoring of a professional handbook for the effective promotion and exploitation of the project’s research achievements.

REHOUSE: Renovation Packages for Holistic Improvement of EU’s Buildings Efficiency

2023–2024 | DUTH

A European project developing innovative and holistic renovation solutions to increase the scope and productivity of the renovation process, improve comfort and satisfaction of building inhabitants, and maximise integrated decentralised renewable energy generation. The project developed 8 renovation packages deployed across 4 demo sites in Greece, Italy, France, and Hungary.

My role: Data profiling for the identification of energy conditions and the design of social innovation actions. Documentation of needs and evaluation of the effectiveness of proposed renovation packages. Design of personalised activity plans for validation of results and recording of impacts throughout the renovation package lifecycle.

US Embassy Open Innovation: Design and Development of Innovative Products Based on Circular Economy

2019 | DUTH

A capacity-building initiative addressing real-world challenges faced by SMEs through the lens of circular economy and innovative product development. The project delivered a series of seminars and hands-on workshops attended by company representatives, combining lectures with collaborative exercises focused on translating innovation goals into actionable product development strategies.

My role: Design and delivery of training content across three thematic areas: Product and Service Design & Development Principles; Journey of the Prototyping Process; and Testing Prototypes at parts, systems, and models level. The work involved lectures and interactive workshops with company representatives, providing mentorship on communicating innovation specifications and engaging with circular economy objectives.

A web-based platform built on the Potree library for visualising and semantically enriching large-scale 3D point clouds. Supports both point-level and volumetric spatial annotations, enabling users to define regions of interest and classify them against configurable taxonomies.

Key capabilities include context-oriented annotations with custom icons for encoding operational plans, real-time IoT data integration displaying sensor histories with computed statistics (averages, extremes, thresholds), and manual 3D segmentation for classifying volumes by material, function, or purpose.

Applied across industrial equipment monitoring, urban area modelling, cultural heritage documentation, and scientific infrastructure, the platform effectively serves as a digital twin where 3D geometry meets live sensor data and structured semantic metadata.

A web-based self-assessment and monitoring tool that transforms the European Code of Conduct for Data Centre Energy Efficiency from a static regulatory document into an actionable, trackable compliance framework. Each rule across all dimensions (energy, environment, building infrastructure, organisation, staffing, and training) is broken down into granular, manageable checklists.

A built-in point allocation system gamifies the compliance journey, providing motivation and clear progress indicators. Administrators can incrementally log their alignment with each requirement, turning binary yes/no assessments into a structured, step-by-step path towards full regulatory coverage.

The platform maintains a historical record of compliance evolution, making audits and sustainability reporting straightforward.

Safety4All: Collective Awareness Platform for OHS

A collective awareness platform engaging workers and the general public in occupational health and safety reporting. As technical coordinator, I led the system architecture design and the integration strategy between a mobile application and a web-based administration panel.

The mobile app enables field users to submit safety observations through structured quizzes, free-form reports, and a conversational dialogue system, complemented by crowd-routing and voice-assisted reporting capabilities. An AI classification engine automatically categorises each submission by failure type, hazard source, and severity level.

Safety officers access a web dashboard where they review both the reporter's classification and the AI's assessment, performing human-in-the-loop validation to confirm or refine each categorisation. This transforms the broader workforce into a distributed human sensor network for continuous safety monitoring, while a gamification layer with point rewards incentivises sustained participation.

APTOS: Smart Exhibit Audio Streaming Platform

A cloud-based audio streaming and management platform developed for the APTOS project, enabling tactile exploration of museum exhibits by visually impaired visitors. 3D-printed replicas of museum artefacts are equipped with embedded push buttons that trigger contextual audio descriptions during hands-on exploration, providing access to cultural heritage items that visitors are normally not permitted to touch.

I developed the core streaming infrastructure: a Node.js server coordinating real-time audio delivery to all connected smart exhibits using the Howler.js library. The system supports full playback control (pause, stop, repeat, fast-forward) triggered by physical button interactions on each replica.

An accompanying web-based administration panel provides museum staff with a live overview of all connected exhibits, including battery status, current playback state, and detailed interaction logs recording which buttons were activated on which replica. All events and session data are stored in MongoDB for monitoring and analytics.

A comprehensive e-learning module on Condition Monitoring and Maintenance Technologies, developed and deployed on the Moodle learning management system. The course targets maintenance managers and engineers, providing structured training across the full spectrum of maintenance knowledge.

The module covers non-destructive testing methods, inspection techniques, fault diagnostics approaches, maintenance policies and strategies, wireless sensor network technologies, and IoT-based monitoring systems. Each thematic unit includes custom-developed content, illustrative diagrams, and self-assessment quizzes designed to reinforce learning outcomes and evaluate comprehension.

All materials, including theoretical content, visual assets, and evaluation instruments, were authored and integrated into Moodle as a self-contained learning object, supporting both self-paced study and structured training programmes for industrial maintenance professionals.
